Review » PowerSkin has goods for the HTC Sensation and HTC ThunderBolt

Review » PowerSkin has goods for the HTC Sensation and HTC ThunderBolt
PowerSkin – the name that is a godsend for those who make heavy use of their iPhones, has now opened the door for owners of the HTC Sensation and HTC ThunderBolt to enjoy an additional boost of power as well as protection from the daily rigors of portable use. The HTC ThunderBolt is one of the first few 4G/LTE handsets out there, and one of its major drawbacks would be the huge power drain on its battery when on 4G networks. Having additional juice on hand is always useful, as you never know when you might need to make that emergency call without a power outlet nearby.

You basically get to enjoy twice the power thanks to the built-in batteries in the respective case, sporting an extra smooth finish on the outside which is made of shock-absorbing silicone, delivering maximum protection in the process.

The HTC Sensation PowerSkin is said to offer the HTC Sensation with, for the lack of a better word, a sensational battery life, letting you enjoy up to another 360 minutes of extra talk time, courtesy of its 1500 mAh of battery capacity.

As for PowerSkin’s HTC ThunderBolt skin as seen above, you will also enjoy a 1500 mAh battery capacity, extending your talk time by another 340 minutes. This skin itself was specially designed to accommodate the full functionality of the phone’s kickstand, while making sure the HDMI port remains accessible at all times.

Both skins will feature optically engineered camera lens window that makes sure your camera will function as it should without any unwanted interference. Not only that, it makes sure that there won’t be any more flash glare from the skin’s surface to spoil the composition of your photos. To juice it up, just plug in the charging cable into a laptop or wall, where the built-in smart technology will get to work right away – cleverly juicing up your handset before it gives the PowerSkin a jolt.

The HTC Sensation and HTC ThunderBolt skins will be out from the middle of this month onwards for $59.99 a pop.

Review » Jabra STONE 2 Bluetooth headset

Review » Jabra STONE 2 Bluetooth headset
Bluetooth headsets are dime a dozen, but how many of them are truly unique from the rest? Well, Jabra has been a mainstay in the world of Bluetooth devices since time immemorial, so we are not surprised to see the company roll out another Bluetooth headset that keeps up with the times – known as the Jabra STONE 2. Just what does the Jabra STONE 2 bring to the table? Well, you will have to read on to find out in the extended post, but here’s a little primer.

The Jabra STONE 2 is unique in its own way because it is capable of helping you read aloud a text message or an email – perfect when you need your hands and eyes to be focused elsewhere – like the road, for example. Apart from that, you can also opt to update your Facebook or social network site page using nothing but the power of speech, now how about that?

Voice control would be the keywords here. With the Jabra STONE 2, you are empowered to make, answer, end, redial, ignore and reject a call (even call back) using nothing but your voice. Yes sir, all you need to do is memorize a bunch of easy function-related words, and speak them out when in need – among them include “Call Dad”, “Answer”, and “Ignore”, for a true blue hands-free communication experience.

With Voice Guidance, you too will be able to hear the name of the caller via Jabra STONE 2, according to how the name is stored on the handset. Best to get your phone book in order then, otherwise you might find the Jabra STONE 2 go bonkers when it reads out someone known as B4D45S call. Should the caller’s number not be stored in the phone, the Jabra STONE 2 will proceed by reading out the phone number.

Not only that, the introduction of Voice Applications makes the STONE 2 all the more useful as it will make use of the Jabra World of Apps portal, letting you search for apps quickly, ranging from games to entertainment; voice dialing and translation (and even transcription); and GPS service amongst others. The portal also boasts of voice-enabled applications that lets you send text messages or emails using nothing but your voice, or to read what the latest emails are all about, as well as search for a local business.

This uniquely shaped Bluetooth headset has a talk time of 10 hours and 15 days of standby time, and will come in black and white colors. Which suits you better?

Review » Samsung invites travel weary gizmos to charge up

Modern day devices are able to perform a whole lot of tasks, but there is still one major drawback to think about – the lack of battery life. Yes sir, your smartphone might be able to help you arrive at an unfamiliar destination, check the weather, surf the Internet, reply your emails, perform your online shopping needs, but at a price of draining its battery before the day is over.

Those who do plenty of traveling often have to juice up their devices the day before they fly, as only select flights come with a power outlet in economy class (First and Business class passengers need not worry), and sometimes, inter-continental flights might just push the boundaries of your device’s battery to the limit, especially when you’re bored with the in-flight movie catalogue. Samsung feels your pain, which is why they have installed 20 newly designed charging stations throughout the terminals at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

DCA will be the first airport that sees these redesigned charging stations cater to travelers who need a place to conveniently charge their mobile phones, laptops and other personal electronics – for free, yo! With over 40 charging stations at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), you can be sure that having your flight make a transit at those airports would be a boon – not a bane.

These redesigned Samsung Mobile charging stations will comprise of half a dozen electrical outlets that are compatible for U.S. voltage (i.e., 120 volts), two USB charging outlets, a quartet of micro USB mobile phone charging plugs and a touchscreen display which will offer travelers additional value through informational content such as news, weather and flight information.

There is also a “What’s New” tab that users can access to learn more about Samsung Mobile’s latest devices. Apart from that, the charging stations will also boast of a small shelf that can your charging device – just make sure you keep a keen eye out lest someone with fast hands make a quick getaway of your favorite piece of portable consumer electronics.

Review » Volkswagen semi-autonomous hands-free driving system introduced

Review » Volkswagen semi-autonomous hands-free driving system introduced

Wait a minute here – did I read it correctly? Is Volkswagen’s semi-autonomous hands-free driving system supposed to help you get around in your vehicle while keeping your hands free to do something else? The answer is in the affirmative, where Volkswagen has dubbed their new system as the Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP), where it will link between existing driver assist technologies and completely automated vehicles. You as the driver have a role to play – monitoring the system, but at least TAP paves the way for semi-automatic driving on a highway at speeds of up to 130 km/h (80 mph).

You won’t find a driverless car here, but TAP will merge automatic driving assisting technologies that are already in place, alongside semi-automatic functions which require constant monitoring by you, the driver.

TAP is capable of controlling the car’s speed, making sure it maintains a safe distance from other vehicles, while dropping its speed right before a bend. Apart from that, it will also ensure that your vehicle’s central position is retained with respect to lane markers. Needless to say, TAP can be deactivated at any time in case an emergency arises. Despite it being semi-autonomous, that doesn’t mean you can now take off both eyes from the road and play around on your iPhone instead.

Do you happen to look forward to these kinds of driving systems in the future, or do you prefer to remain firmly behind the wheel? We guess that most folks would want to stick with the latter, since humans love to be in control, unless you’re this extremely busy executive who cannot afford a driver. We say stick to the driver – most of them double up as bodyguards anyways on your payroll, so why not get the extra protection? It isn’t as though such smarter vehicles have the IQ of K.I.T.T. in the Knight Rider series…

Review » iCADE iPad Arcade Cabinet

Review » iCADE iPad Arcade Cabinet

The iCADE iPad Arcade Cabinet which was first spotted on ThinkGeek as part of their April Fools’ prank, has finally been turned into flesh thanks to the demand from users who think that it isn’t such a zany idea after all. Being of sturdy built (it needs to be, otherwise who else is it supposed to be able to stand up to the rigors and abuse that arcade cabinets go through out of a player’s frustration at losing?), the iCADE gaming cabinet was specially designed in a retro manner so that it can hold an Apple iPad or its successor, the iPad 2, bringing users back to the good old days when quarters were being fed to the ever hungry machines at a dingy looking local arcade, as you attempted to best the locality’s high score.

According to Ty Liotta, head of ThinkGeek’s GeekLabs, “We partnered with ION Audio to make our vision of the iCADE a reality. After it was announced as an April Fool’s Day joke back in 2010, thousands of our customers wanted it and we’re excited to make it a reality through this partnership.”

The iCADE will come across as a desktop-sized arcade game cabinet, where it will boast a fully-functional gamepad that is complete with retro arcade joystick and buttons. Gameplay is a no brainer on this puppy – all you need to do is slide an iPad into the built-in cradle, hook it up to the iCADE via a Bluetooth connection and you’re good to go. The iCADE itself will be powered by a couple of AA batteries, so we would suggest you get rechargeables such as Sanyo Eneloops if you’re going to do a whole lot of gaming on it.

Not only that, the ThinkGeek iCADE will also sport the original April Fool’s Day retro style graphics that made folks all over the world fall in love with it. With this $99.99 release, expect more downloads and purchases of classic Atari games from the Apple App Store. Atari is also hyped up by this release, having rolled out 100 of its Classic games that are compatible with the iCADE. Atari managed to configure the games for compatibility with the iCADE, where among them include beloved titles such as Pong, Asteroids and Centipede amongst others.

Review » Prelit Halloween Tree

Review » Prelit Halloween Tree

If you’re the type who loves being early for anything and everything, then the Prelit Halloween Tree would definitely be in the pipeline – assuming you celebrate that holiday, of course. After all, Halloween’s still a long way off in October, but it doesn’t hurt to bring home this $249.99 garden enhancement now, does it? Boasting 240 colored LEDs that are encased in plastic four-leaf blossoms, this metal tree will cast an eerie, orange Halloween glow. The LEDs have been rated to work for 25,000 hours, while the branches and trunk are made from weatherproof metal which are sheathed in a black vinyl wrap that contrasts the orange light.

Standing at 6.5 feet tall, the tree sports 10 branches with pliable tips so that you are able to shape it to replicate the random, natural pattern of a live specimen. With an integrated stand and a quartet of stakes, stability outdoors is more or less ensured – unless, of course, a tornado decides to drop by and say hello. Just make sure you have a power outlet nearby to light this puppy up when the occasion arrives.

Review » Jakks Pacific Plug-and-Play Video Games

Review » Jakks Pacific Plug-and-Play Video Games

We have reported on items from Jakks Pacific before, and I had a chance to try out three of their Plug and Play video games. All three of them plug into the television with white and yellow composite cables, and they are all pretty fun.

The first is the Pac-man Retro Arcade, which is a joystick that brings back the goodness of the arcade. Not only is Pac-man available, but all sorts of games like Xevious, Galaga, Dig Dug, and about ten more. I found that it was definitely bringing me back to the old Atari 2600 days, but with better graphics. Hit the jump to see the other two gaming systems.

The second is Golden Tee Golf, and it is strictly a golf game with a track ball controller. The player is able to draw back the club by rolling on the track ball, and then roll it forward quickly to strike it. This one I found difficult to control, but then again, I’ve never really liked golf games.

The third is Big Buck Hunter, and it is a TV adaptation of the arcade game where you shoot bucks, not does. If shooting defenseless animals isn’t your sport, the game also has shooting UFOs, cowpies, and moonshine jugs. Of the three that I reviewed, this game was the only one that required a sensor, and required 3 AAA batteries.

Speaking of batteries, each of them required 4 AA batteries, and they are all available at the Jakks Pacific website now at varying prices. You can also purchase Big Buck Hunter here and the Pac-man Plug and Play here. As for the Golden Tee Golf Game, it is not out yet, and won’t be until the month of August.

Review » iBall3 Helps with Your Ball Control

Review » iBall3 Helps with Your Ball Control

Wait a minute here – the title might sound a little bit naughty, but rest assured, the iball3 has nothing to do with bedroom antics. This £16.99 purchase is actually a handheld puzzle game that is surprisingly simple, but in its simplicity, it blows you away by being infuriatingly tricky, making it a lethal mental combination which makes it extremely hard to put down.

This tiny blue ball sports half a dozen light-up buttons, where each of them might be red, blue or green. Whenever you press them, they will change their color, although not in a predictable cycle. The whole idea of the game is to figure out just which sequence you should press them in, so that they all transform into the same color. This is one baffling, maddening and thoroughly addictive ball! Powered by a trio of LR44 batteries, you can even submit your high scores to an online leaderboard for that added competitive edge.

Review » Sanyo introduces XX rechargeable batteries

Review » Sanyo introduces XX rechargeable batteries

When it comes to rechargeable batteries, you won’t go wrong with the name Sanyo. After all, they are the ones who rolled out the eneloop series in the past, which are still going strong today. Heck, I have a few eneloops that I use around the home for my remote controls and old school digital camera, and they don’t show off any signs of wearing down despite so many charges over the years.

Well, it isn’t Sanyo’s character to just sit there without doing anything, which is why they have just announced the XX rechargeable batteries. These will naturally take a page out of eneloop’s book by relying on eneloop technology, making the XX powered by eneloop ready to use right out of the box as it can retain up to 75% of its charge after one year of storage. The XX powered by eneloop package of four AA batteries will arrive from next month onwards, retailing for $24.99 a pop. If you can’t wait, then look towards Amazon as they will be featuring the item for pre-sale starting from today onwards.

The XX is a Nickel-Metal Hydride battery that is suited for gadgets with high power consumption, where among them include DSLR photoflash units, radio control toys, walkie-talkies, game controllers and other equally demanding applications. They not only help you live out a green lifestyle, they are also green before you even purchase them – because back at the factory, they are pre-charged by solar power.

“Standard eneloop batteries are perfect for powering common household devices but XX powered by eneloop provides 25% more power for extreme usage requirements. And speaking of extreme, XX powered by eneloop provides rechargeable battery power even when temperatures get down to -4 degrees Fahrenheit,” said Tom Van Voy, Vice President and General Manager of the Digital Solutions Division for Sanyo North America.

Capable of being juice up to 300 times, the 2500 mAh capacity XX powered by eneloop batteries ought to be able to last longer than you think, where it will come in stylish black and silver design to symbolize its appropriateness for professional use.

Review » Sony Smart AR brings integrated Augmented Reality to the masses

Review » Sony Smart AR brings integrated Augmented Reality to the masses

Sony’s Smart AR will deliver integrated Augmented Reality to the mass market, where it is capable of capturing visuals via a device’s camera (a smartphone is a good example), where this technology will allow additional information to be displayed on the device’s screens including virtual objects, in addition to images and texts which cannot be identified by visual perception alone.

The technology will make use of the markerless approach, where you will not need any special markers such as 2D barcodes. The camera will capture the object, where it is quickly recognized and can be tracked at high-speed along with the movement of the camera, with all of it displayed over the actual 3D space.

AR technology has been around for quite some time already, but interest in it has picked up again recently, where it will see new applications in advertisements, promotions, games, and information searches. Sony did have their first foray into AR research all the way back in 1994 with two-dimensional barcodes recognition (marker approach), and in 1998, they came up with the VAIO “PCG-C1″ personal computer range that were equipped with software which automatically recognized ‘CyberCode’.

Smart AR technology will merge object recognition technology (markerless approach in which no special markers are required) for recognition of general objects including photos and posters, relying on Sony’s own proprietary 3D space recognition technology. This technology is capable of facilitating the expression of AR information over an extended space, hence resulting in a dynamic, large-scale AR experience.

In addition, all information can be acquired or navigated through the simple touch of the AR information which is splashed across the smartphone’s (or relevant device) screen, hence ending up with an intuitive and seamless user interface that is unique to Smart AR.

Sony hopes to continue experimenting with Smart AR technology, hoping that services and business applications such as advertising and games will be able to achieve added value in the long run. What are some of the implementations of AR that have you impressed?

Review » Ubiquitous iRemoTap is a Wi-Fi connected power strip

Review » Ubiquitous iRemoTap is a Wi-Fi connected power strip

If you are like me, you have “that desk” in your house that is sort of the hub for digital information. On the desk is a laptop or desktop computer, and all kinds of accessories.

Chances are, all of these devices are plugged in to a power strip, and they are a source of great power consumption on your monthly electric bill. This power strip by Japan-based Ubiquitous is the iRemoTap, and it has a built-in Wi-Fi module.

The purpose of the Wi-Fi is so it can send information to connected devices in the household. The iRemoTap can automatically send out some sort of message like an email or tweet so you know how much energy that you are consuming.

In fact, you can program this thing for a preset level, so you can make energy goals and hopefully keep them. I guess you will have to know what levels your devices have, of course. I don’t really know that off the top of my head.

So is this the wave of the future? All of us knowing how much power we consume and making certain that we live up to it? Well, it is better than the model that most of us have, which is just use up power and then pay the bill.

Jacko Steps are straight out of Billie Jean video

Jacko Steps are straight out of Billie Jean video

I was listening to the radio in the car yesterday, and Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean came on the air.

While my wife and I were questioning the lyrics, I couldn’t help but think of the video for the song. I swear, Michael Jackson’s videos took music videos to a whole new level back in the 1980s.

I’m not certain how old our average reader actually is, but find the Billie Jean music video online and watch it if you have never seen it before. Not to be too much of a spoiler, but it shows Jacko walking on sidewalk tiles that mysteriously glow every time he puts his foot on them. Now you can have these glowing steps in your own backyard with the appropriately named Jacko Steps.

It does not look like these rocks glow whenever one steps on them. However, the purpose of these steps isn’t to replicate a video that is sadly retro, but an alternative to those lights that illuminate paths.

This totally makes sense. Why purchase lights that illuminate a path when you can just make the path glow. I suppose that The Wiz version of Michael Jackson would be totally easing down this road. Okay, I’m totally out of Michael Jackson references and still cannot believe it has been two years since his untimely demise. I think that is about all I should say about it.

Review » Vertical Vinyl Player

Review » Vertical Vinyl Player

Let’s face the facts – many of us who have visited our grandparents would probably have come across this ancient artifact (OK, so it wasn’t that ancient but you know how it is with the advent of MP3s and digital media content these days) known as a record, or vinyl player. If your memory serves you right, it would mean dusting off those old vinyls and playing them on the record player – horizontally placed, of course.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and iPods with its numerous clones of portable media players have taken over the world when it comes to the mobile music experience, but what happens when you retreat back to your home after a particularly long day at the office, hoping to relax in classic tunes that only a vinyl can offer with its warmth? Enter the Vertical Vinyl that will ship at the end of June onwards, although you can place a pre-order for it for £79.99.

The name itself gives the game away – you can mount this puppy vertically, helping you save space in your home at the same time. Grandpa might love to have this for Father’s Day, don’t you think so?

Review » TDK Sound Cube

Review » TDK Sound Cube

The TDK Sound Cube brings new meaning to “surround sound”, that’s for sure. It should be called “surrounded sound” instead, since the cube that you see on the right should find a happy audience regardless of where they are seated – as long as the crowd size is right, of course. Right now up for pre-order, the £299.99 TDK Sound Cube measures just 25.5cm³, making it the smallest in its range, but it is no pushover where performance levels are concerned.

Each of the Cube’s vertical sides will boast of its own speaker (two of them are active while the other two are passive), delivering 360° of party-starting audio, not to mention the nice touch of a sturdy leather handle on top that makes toting it around fun and comfortable. It can be powered by mains or a dozen D batteries (the latter is certainly going to fill up those landfills, fast!), so make sure you use rechargeables if you’re gunning for the latter.

At the back lies a quartet of separate sound ports, letting you plug in a variety of devices such as a portable media player or an electric guitar. Perfect for the day out with the rest of your family, listening to your favorite tunes all round in 20 watts RMS glory.

Review » All Terrain Electric Bicycle

Review » All Terrain Electric Bicycle

Everyone knows that exercising regularly is one of the key components when it comes to keeping your fitness levels up and at an optimal point. Sometimes though, doing the same thing week in, week out could prove to be way too repetitive for our liking, and a change is always more than welcome. Cycling could be one of the more interesting sports you can get involved in, as you can always go to different places with various scenery in order to experience something apart from the norm.

Unfortunately, bicycles can only get you so far in terms of terrain, and different bikes cater for different types of terrain. The All Terrain Electric Bicycle, as its name suggests, was specially designed by an aerospace engineer, and it is the only electric bicycle which is capable of traversing through deserts and tundras in a jiffy, similar to how it glides across pavement.

There is a 600-watt brushless electric motor that will drive a 14-speed gearing configuration, capable of hitting a top speed of 40 mph on straightaways, while unparalleled torque will help you climb steep grades quickly. With a 51″-wide wheel base and 20″ diameter x 8″ wide tubeless monocoque tires, it is the widest in the industry to offer added stability during tight turns and traction on dirt, sand, or snow.

There is just one drawback – the lithium-ion battery will offer just up to an hour’s worth of assisted pedaling after a three-hour charge, so make sure it is well juiced the night before always. The All Terrain Electric Bicycle won’t come cheap either at $9,700.

Review » Dreamtrap EASYWAKEme Sleep Stage Alarm Clock

Review » Dreamtrap EASYWAKEme Sleep Stage Alarm Clock

Sleep is vital to the well being of humans, any doctor can tell you that. Heck, you need not slog your way through medical school (suffering from a lack of sleep in the process, how ironic is that?) to know that having the right amount of sleep is important to make sure you function at peak efficiency. Well, some of us get too much, most of us get too little, but the EASYWAKEme Sleep Stage Alarm Clock from Dreamtrap intends to help you achieve the perfect balance.

Ready to rock and roll this coming July, the innovative sleep monitor will be able to detect the most optimal moments for you to wake up through the simple monitoring of customers’ sleep. This means with enough data collected, you will be awakened stress-free while feeling totally alert, energized and ready to meet the new day, never mind that you are already behind schedule in your work.

Make no mistake about it, this is very different from a regular alarm clock, where the EASYWAKEme functions as a sleep monitoring and waking system which will track body motion and detect sleep phases. The Dreamtrap’s proprietary 3D Adaptive Sleep Capture (3D ASC) technology is capable of “reading” body characteristics, tracking sleep duration and efficiency so that it can accurately determine the optimal wake-up moment and reduce your daily wake-up stress.

Accompanied by a wearable sensor that is compatible with most cell phones, this sensor comes in the form of a comfortable band that is worn on the wrist while sleeping. All you need to do is set the required time window to be awakened, and the supporting application will get to work, transforming the cell phone into a sleep phase alarm clock. Relying on a silent vibrating alarm mode, or choosing from your favorite wake-up tunes, EASYWAKEme is well on its way to help you get a healthy night’s sleep.

It can also let you review your personal sleep stats, track sleep duration and evaluate sleep efficiency, as all information on sleep is automatically uploaded to a web site via your cell phone. It is ready to hit the UK for £99, with no word on a Stateside release just yet.
